Sukru Ali OGEL (1886-1973)

Sukru Ali OGEL, who was born in Istanbul in 1886, graduated from the War College and joined the army as a lieutenant on August 13, 1909 and during the War of Liberation he took part in the Staff Board for the Western Front. Following the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, he served for the Straits Commission in Istanbul during 1925-1926, guided the establishment efforts of the Directorate of National Security Service (MAH) and was appointed as Director of the MAH with the rank of Staff Lieutenant Colonel by the Governmental Decree of December 25, 1926. On August 3, 1928 he was promoted to the rank of Staff Colonel. On December 22, 1936 he retired from the Turkish Armed Forces with the rank of Colonel but continued to serve as Director of the MAH.

On May 25, 1937, he was elected deputy from Istanbul to fill the chair emptied by poet Abdulhak Hamit TARHAN with his death on April 13, 1937. During the 5th, 6th and 7th terms he was in the Parliament as the deputy of Istanbul.

Sukru Ali OGEL, who spoke French and Russian, was both a Deputy and the Director of the MAH during the period of May 25, 1937 - July 7, 1941 with the approval of the Prime Ministry.

Due to the fact that he had some disagreements in principle with the then Prime Minister Refik SAYDAM, he resigned from office and died on June 1, 1973.
