Nurettin ERSIN (1918 - 2005)
He is a graduate of the War Academy. After his mission abroad and his service at various
ranks of the Turkish Armed Forces to which he had joined as Infantry
Second-Lieutenant in 1937, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier
General in 1964 and was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the 3rd
Army. Between the years 1966-67 he served as the Commander of the
66th Division, and served as Head of Department at the
MIT to which he was appointed in the same year. While performing
his above-mentioned task, he was promoted to the rank of Major General
in 1967. Then he returned to the Turkish Armed Forces where he served
as the Commander of the 4th Infantry Division between
1969-70. In 1971, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General
and was appointed to the Western Station Command. During the term
between August 02, 1971 - July 25, 1973, he served as the Undersecretary
of the National Intelligence Organization under the rank of Lieutenant
General. After his departure from the Organization, he was appointed,
first, as the 6th Corps Commander and then as the Commander
of Cypriot Turkish Peace Forces. In 1974, he was promoted to the
rank of Army General. He served, in sequence, as the Commander General
of the Gendarmerie, as the Secretary General of the National Security
Board, and as the Commander of the Ground Forces. After the coup
d'état on September 12, 1980, he became a Member of the National
Security Council. In 1983, he was appointed as the Chief of Staff,
and in the same year he retired from the Turkish Armed Forces, while
his Membership at the Presidential Council continued for 6 years
until 1989. Nurettin ERSIN, died on Oct 03, 2005.
